Why an editable code needs an account
A dynamic, editable code redirects through a short link whose destination we store so you can change it later. That record has to belong to someone, both so only you can edit it and so we can respond if a code is used for abuse. That is why editing after printing requires a free account, while a plain static code does not.
Which one you actually want
If the link will never move, a no-sign-up static code is simplest. If the destination might change, or you want to know whether the code was scanned, create a free account for a dynamic code and avoid a reprint later.
